This month, I introduce you Tanja Praske, the lively scientific collaborator in the Bavarian Castles Direction. Polyglot and open, the over-active Tanja is a key person in the German museogeeks group but furthermore to understand how involve visitors and professional to more collaboration and participation in the cultural fields.

1)  Tanja, who are you? What is your occupation? / Tanja, wer bist du? Was machst du?

Tanja PraskeI have a PhD in Art history, I am Culture blogger and Social Media manager in the cultural sector. After graduating with my degree at the Sorbonne University in Paris, I wrote my thesis on the French royal image in the Middle Ages. They can be viewed online. After that, I worked on a DFG-project on the Past research on emotions at the Art History Institute of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, before I arrived in the museums world. Thanks to a scientific volunteering in the Museum of the Bavarian Palace Department, I was increasingly interested by the possibilities of Digital cultural Mediation. During my two-year traineeship I built the Residenz blog and the Facebook page of the Residenz Museum, worked on texts for the Ludwig II App for the Bavarian State Library and looked at the educational programme of the New Castle in Oberschleißheim (texts for room tags and for the redesign of the documentation space). Then I joined the public relations of the Bavarian Palace Department as a Research Assistant. Now, I am in charge of an app project until the end of May 2015. I designed the team, wrote lyrics and coordinated the implementation of the free app “Nymphenburg Park. Strolling through the Park” (iOS / Android). Currently I set about marketing measures for the application of #NymApp, such as lectures, editing of articles or blog posts, as well as the Tweetwalk #LustWandeln on 19th of April 2015 in Nymphenburg Palace.

As a cultural blogger I am writing on www.tanjapraske.de since October 2012 about Digital cultural Education, Science, museum family visits and everything culturally else that inspired me.

Strolling through the Park“ (iOS/Android).

2)  What is Kulturkonsorten for you? Is it a testing lab to after show “finished products” to cultural institutions or a totally separated world because of the lack of restraint? / Kultur und Experimentieren

A Tweetup at the Residenz Museum in Munich brought me closer to Kulturkonsorten, at the end I had to withdraw from them for family reasons. But I am still feeling connected with them also because they can promote Culture where it would be difficult for cultural institutions. The Kulturkonsorten is a network for Culture. This cultural Organisation accompanies professional from Cultural institutions on Social Web possibilities. They advise them, develop Social media strategies for them and implement them for the institutions. Currently they work with the Bavarian Palace Department on a Tweetwalk in one of the parks of Nymphenburg Palace (19/04/15 at 11:00). Bloggers, twitterers and Instagramers can sign up for it. You will be drawn and walk through the park during one hour and a half. Impressions will be sent by pictures or words message on Twitter or Instagram and can be followed by the #LustWandeln hashtag. Anyone who follows the hashtag is encouraged to participate. The Kulturkonsorten will activate its network for the Tweetwalk and moderate it along with the Management Department of the castle.

Professional structures in the Web 2.0 communication are needed. This is exactly where networks can help, such asTanja Praske_stARTcamp13_01 Kulturkonsorten does. You have a lot of freedom, that museums do not necessarily have. Sometimes these institutions don’t have appropriate tools, Social media channels, the experience with the Media or simply the necessary staff to implement successful social Media campaigns. Therefore, it is worth working with Kulturkonsorten, particularly if you want to have a particular impact on the social web for certain actions. Community centres and cultural workers benefit equally from each other so. If an institution counts on its staff the relevant professionals for these tasks, it may well lift Social Media activities by its own. If this is not the case, a collaboration with experts from the field is very worthwhile.

3) Do you think that there is a real evolution since your beginnings or the cultural world stays on the same basics? / Gibt es Entwicklung?

There is a change since its inception in the Bavarian Palace Department. Whereas that started at first as a collaboration for the Ludwig II App, the Management Department of the castle redeployed it later as its own in the “Schloss Nymphenburg” app. A Tweetup on a small scale, as happened in the Residenz Museum 2011, allowed to try a larger rolled out for this current Tweetwalk in Nymphenburg Park with the courage to experiment. Because the need to engage the institution in the social web is now detected, we have made a start.

Tanja Praske_Kunstputz_Ludwig-II-Schlitten-MarstallmuseumWhen I look at the German museums in the social web, then has done a lot since 2011. Meanwhile, there are 88 museum blogs in German-speaking countries and this number is rising! (list you can find in my blogroll Museum). They show the museological everyday life, provide fascinating glimpses behind the scenes. Facebook and Twitter are no more foreign words. Fantastic Social Web actions take place, however ekes social media, the cultural institutions still stay often a niche. The acceptance of in-house and above all the decision-makers should be larger than it is. The potential is not completely recognised, although the trend is positive. Cultural institutions intensified support for certain actions, what is right. Nevertheless, there are hardly Community Manager or Social Media Manager in every museums. Extra staff will hardly hire for these tasks, still often assigned to interns or volunteers. But this has nothing to do with a targeted communication strategy of the institutions. Also the Social Media presence of a museum must become more professional. There is still a lot of development work to do.

4) Do you think that collaborations can really rise between countries and communities? / Welche Zukunft siehst du über Kollaborationen?

I really greet any stronger collaboration between the Länder (regions) and communities and hope it will improve soon. We all push in this direction. Groups like MuzeoNum are important here, and the International Museum Day is an important marker. But at the end, it’s the will of networking from institutions and cultural workers that really link us. I think a National and International cooperation is very important for Culture. I think for example of the contributing actions such as #MuseumWeek, #AskACurator, #MuseumsDay, etc. or #MuseumNext. If we share here more targeted and support to each other in the actions, then we can root more firmly Culture in Society, then Culture can shape societies and be designed by you. The exchange could be bigger, but positive signs are already there.

I thank you very much for this interview and hope for an active National and International participation in our Tweetwalk #lustwandeln and at other actions for Culture!
